Tournaments

Here we learn how to manage tournaments

Tournaments are knockout events played as a single-elimination bracket. Manage them from Club Admin → Competitions → Tournaments, and create one with New tournament. For how a tournament plays from a player's side, see How competitions work.

How it works

Choose a Bracket size (4 to 256, or As many as sign up). Players or pairs sign up, and when the tournament starts they are drawn into the bracket:

  • Seeds — give the strongest entrants a seed on the Players tab, so they are kept apart in the early rounds (Seed). Everyone else is drawn at random.
  • Byes — when the entrants don't fill the bracket, some go straight to the second round (Bye).
  • As results are recorded, winners move to the next round automatically, and their next opponent is notified.

A tournament has these tabs: Settings, Players, Bracket and Venues.

Tournament status

Like a league, a tournament moves through statuses: Draft while you set it up, Sign-up open and Sign-up closed, In progress once matches are underway, and Finished once a winner is decided.

Tournaments that repeat

A tournament takes sign-ups only while it has places and its sign-up is open. When it is full or closed, the member app says so and doesn't put players on a waiting list.

For a tournament that runs regularly, such as a monthly circuit, or finals after a league, set it up as a stage of a planned competition. Each tournament it creates awards points by the round a team reached, and they count towards one table. On a tournament that hasn't started, the Settings tab offers Create a planned competition, with this tournament as the template.

To print a tournament's schedule as a PDF, open it in the member app and choose Print schedule: By round, By day, or Upcoming matches only.
